2017 Leadership Institute

2017 Leadership Institute

The 2017 Annual Meeting welcomed the second cohort of SBM's year-long Leadership Institute for mid-career members.

SBM Past-President Marian L. Fitzgibbon, PhD, began developing the year-long Leadership Institute for mid-career members in 2016 after identifying leadership training as a high-need area among mid-career individuals, despite the fact that they often find themselves at pivotal career junctures where leadership skills or career coaching would prove helpful.

The second annual Leadership Institute kicked off at SBM's 2017 Annual Meeting. The 36 Leadership Institute fellows met during an intensive two-day workshop which included sessions on:

  • Understanding yourself as an emerging leader
  • leadership influencing
  • Thriving amid chaos
  • Welcoming diversity and fostering inclusivity
  • Crafting, practicing, and executing highly effective impromptu pitches

Following the in-person session, fellows participated throughout the year in individual coaching sessions, developed self-selected leadership projects under the mentorship of recognized SBM leaders, and joined periodic calls with a “learning community” of five to seven fellows with similar professional interests.

Leadership Institute fellows met for a two-day training on March 28-29 during SBM’s 2017 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.

2017-18 fellows have shared testimonials about the institute's benefits:

Olivia Affuso, PhD, on coaching:
“I've had my first call with my coach and I just love her! She helped me see why I have been struggling by graphically illustrating my many commitments. My focus now is on reducing some of the workload by either stepping down or delegating tasks. I have already made some changes and can feel the difference in my work.”

Robert Newton, PhD, on workshop sessions:
“The Leadership Institute has been exactly what I needed and more than what I expected. I immediately implemented strategies we were taught during the workshop: arranging my day, how to handle emails, and mobile phone use at work.”

Congratulations to the 2017-18 Leadership Institute fellows:
