Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Psychosocial, Behavioral and Community Research in Cancer

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) invites applications to its postdoctoral research training program in psychosocial, behavioral and community research in cancer. This longstanding NCI-funded training program is designed to prepare fellows for academic careers as independent investigators engaged in clinically significant research on the psychosocial and behavioral aspects of cancer prevention, detection and control. Fellows complete a formal didactic curriculum and actively participate in funded studies led by senior faculty so that fellows gain expertise in all aspects of project development, grant writing, study implementation, data analyses, and dissemination of findings via oral presentations and manuscript preparation. Fellows receive guidance from senior faculty mentors in the development of independent research interest and grant proposals. Current faculty interests include cancer survivorship, psychotherapy research with patients and family caregivers, neurocognitive sequelae of cancer treatment, physician-patient communication, quality of life, risk perception and cancer communication, tobacco cessation and other health behavior change interventions, symptom management, and addressing disparities in cancer care. Many research projects are community-based and target urban, medically underserved populations.

Senior research training faculty include Tim Ahles, PhD, William Breitbart, MD, Katherine DuHamel, PhD, David Kissane, MD, Jamie Ostroff, PhD and Steven Passik, PhD. Multi-disciplinary collaborations within the institution and outreach to community-based organizations are well established and allow strong ties to community populations. Stipends and benefits are highly competitive (based on training and years of experience) and housing is available for trainees. Doctorate in psychology, nursing, public health or a related behavioral/social sciences field is required and prior experience conducting clinical or community-based research related to health, and strong quantitative skills preferred. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until all training slots are filled. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
