Description/Mission Statement

The Physical Activity SIG is a forum for advancing the behavioral physical activity field through developing submissions for the SBM conference, providing an avenue for mentoring junior investigators with physical activity interests, and identifying appropriate individuals interested in serving as reviewers for relevant scientific journals, National Institutes of Health study sections, and SBM conference submissions.

Physical Activity SIG Advisory Board

The PA SIG Advisory Board was developed to support the mission of the SIG and is comprised of SBM full, transitional, and trainee members. The board meets monthly during the academic year and is responsible for planning and executing all SIG activities. Advisory Board members are usually assigned to two working groups and are expected serve a term of two years or more.

This group is tasked with developing bi-annual SBM-sponsored webinars focused on cutting edge physical activity-related topics.

Karen Calfas Physical Activity Student Research Excellence Award

Dr. Karen Calfas joined SBM as a doctoral student in 1988 and remained an active member until her passing in May 2019. Her research focused on physical activity among university students, and she held a variety of positions in university student health, including as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Wellness at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Calfas dedicated her working life to students, and this award keeps her memory alive by annually recognizing excellent student research in her main research topic area.
