Description/Mission Statement

Aligning with the mission and goals of SBM, the Integrative Health and Spirituality SIG (IHS SIG) focuses on spiritual and integrative health approaches as they relate to behavioral medicine. We are a multidisciplinary group dedicated to promoting the understanding of several domains that are not generally considered part of conventional Western medicine, including: mind and body practices; religious and/or spiritual practices; natural products; and nutritional approaches. The IHS SIG seeks to encourage and support well-designed empirical research to contribute to our understanding of the efficacy of these approaches as well as which biopsychosocial processes underlie specific spiritual and/or complementary and integrative health practices. Our SIG also has a strong focus on advancing the science of these approaches among lower-income and racial/ethnic populations who have been underrepresented in spirituality and integrative health research.
